Muslim Voices Heard: Nadia Rasul Advances to General Election!


In a significant development for Ohio's Muslim community, the May 6, 2025, Democratic primary for Hilliard City Council saw three Muslim candidates—Nadia Rasul, Dorothy Hassan, and Samer Bazerbashi—competing for four open seats. Nadia Rasul secured a spot on the November general election ballot, marking a notable achievement for Muslim representation in local governance.

The unofficial results from the Franklin County Board of Elections are as follows:

  • Tina Cottone: 1,932 votes (17%)

  • Kathy Parker-Jones: 1,870 votes (17%)

  • Andy Teater: 1,776 votes (15%)

  • Nadia Rasul: 1,687 votes (14%)

  • Dorothy Hassan: 1,587 votes (14%)

  • Tony Moog: 1,492 votes (13%)

  • Samer Bazerbashi: 1,356 votes (12%) WOSU Public Media

Nadia Rasul, a longtime Hilliard resident and pharmacist, expressed her commitment to serving the community, stating, "I've been serving Hilliard for 36 years. This is nothing new. It's amazing to be able to serve Hilliard in this capacity" .WOSU Public Media


The Noor Islamic Cultural Center (NICC) actively encouraged Muslim residents to participate in the primary election, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement in shaping the future of the community. In a message to the community, NICC Chairman Ronney Abaza highlighted the significance of the election, stating, "Our Masjid needs EVERY Muslim living in Hilliard to VOTE in the Hilliard City Council Democratic Primary Election so that we can elect a Council that will allow us to PRAY in our new building!" .noorohio.org+1noorohio.org+1


The primary election results reflect the growing diversity and political engagement within Hilliard, a suburb of Columbus experiencing demographic shifts. The successful advancement of a Muslim candidate to the general election ballot underscores the increasing representation of minority communities in local politics.


The four Democratic nominees—Tina Cottone, Kathy Parker-Jones, Andy Teater, and Nadia Rasul—will face three Republican candidates in the November general election, vying for the four available council seats.
